Tebogo Maleka

Tebogo is an environmental scientist and program management specialist with deep technical expertise in waste sector methane mitigation, measurement, reporting, and verification (MRV) frameworks, and data-driven climate policy.

At the Global Methane Hub (GMH), she serves as the program manager for the WasteMAP initiative . She leads strategic efforts to scale the platform’s impact by integrating satellite-based emissions data and bottom-up inventory modeling into national policy architectures and investment pipelines across the Global South. Tebogo oversees the expansion of WasteMAP’s country engagements, ensuring that high-resolution emissions data translates into actionable regulatory frameworks and bankable mitigation projects. She works at the intersection of technical implementation and strategic partnership development, collaborating with environment ministries, multilateral development banks, and technology partners to automate landfill detection, enhance data fusion, and democratize access to decision-support tools for regulators in the global south and beyond.

Prior to joining GMH, Tebogo served as a national evaluation expert for the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) in South Africa. There, she played a pivotal role in the Global Environment Facility (GEF)-funded projects advancing organic waste-to-energy technologies and low-carbon pathways, directly contributing to the growth of the biogas market in micro-, small-, and medium-scale enterprises. Her work on waste characterization programs and sustainable alternatives to single-use plastics informed national policy alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (UNSDCF) and South Africa’s District Development Model.

Tebogo holds a bachelor’s in natural and environmental sciences from the University of Johannesburg, an honors degree in environmental management from the University of South Africa, and a master’s in aquatic health from the University of Johannesburg. She also earned her Ph.D. from the University of Johannesburg.

Outside of work, she is an ultra marathon runner who enjoys pilates and spending time outdoors, drawing inspiration from the natural environments she works to protect. Tebogo is based in South Africa.
