Santiago Fariña

Santiago is a livestock systems expert with over 20 years of experience spanning research, extension, and executive leadership. 

At the Global Methane Hub (GMH), he manages a diverse portfolio of projects across 36 countries in Africa, Asia, and Latin America, focusing on the dual goals of increasing livestock productivity and reducing methane emissions intensity. His work involves scoping of innovative ideas, co-designing and monitoring high-impact projects and the cultivation of strategic partnerships across the global livestock sector.

An agronomist by training, Santiago holds a Ph.D in dairy systems from the University of Sydney. His career is marked by significant leadership roles in both the public and private sectors, including serving as the national dairy coordinator for the AACREA farmers network in Argentina (2012-2015) and as the national director of dairy at INIA Uruguay (2015-2023). As a dedicated researcher and postgraduate lecturer, he has authored more than 45 international publications.

Santiago’s expertise is rooted in his upbringing on a beef farm in southern Argentina. Today, he lives with his family in a rural area near Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay. Outside of his professional work, he is an avid reader, enjoys horseback riding and water sports.
