Global Methane Hub at COP31: The Methane Moment at Scale

What to Expect at COP31

The Global Methane Hub (GMH) is looking forward to collaborating and convening with governments, philanthropies, scientists, and civil society to advance collective action on methane globally, through conversations at COP31 in Antalya. Over two weeks, 11 team members will participate in dozens of sessions.

Below you can explore our major announcements, initiatives, and where we’ll be throughout COP31.

At COP31, the Global Methane Hub will focus on one of the world’s most urgent climate challenges: limiting how far and how long global warming exceeds 1.5°C, the threshold scientists warn could bring increasingly dangerous climate impacts. Cutting methane emissions is one of our best opportunities to slow warming quickly. We have better technology than ever to detect and reduce methane pollution. Now is the time to implement solutions at scale. GMH will join global leaders, scientists, journalists, activists, and practitioners to turn data into action and accelerate progress around the world.

The Global Methane Hub will be joining TED Countdown House and the Zero Waste Pavilion at COP31 to hold conversations about methane and explore how we can scale solutions to reach methane emissions reduction goals and limit warming.

Momentum Heading Into COP31:

  • Building global public support: A new GMH-commissioned survey across 18 countries found overwhelming global demand for stronger action on methane, underscoring that people everywhere want immediate solutions to reduce pollution and improve health.
  • Advancing agricultural innovation: The Rice Methane Innovation Accelerator unveiled a new strategy that will advance research into agronomic practices, soil amendments, plant genetics, methane-reducing agents and measurement tools to support more sustainable rice production.
  • Scaling waste methane reduction: The Zero Waste Districts Initiative, launched in September, targets organic waste and methane reduction in cities around the world by integrating facilities, waste streams, shared infrastructure, local governance and investment within a defined area. The initiative is taking shape across several regions, with pilot districts in Malaysia, Chile, Brazil and Kenya, with plans to scale.
  • Expanding energy-sector methane abatement: In partnership with Frontier 25, the Global Methane Hub held a high-level policy dialogue on methane mitigation in Abu Dhabi, bringing together senior government, regulatory and industry leaders to discuss emerging findings and recommendations from their collaborative research project.
