A first-of-its-kind report from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Climate & Clean Air Coalition (CCAC) finds that tackling climate change and air pollution together could prevent 144 million premature deaths by 2050 while delivering greater economic benefits than addressing the two separately.
“In addition to lives lost, air pollution is responsible for millions of people living with asthma, heart disease, dementia and other illnesses that affect their quality of life, their families and their ability to work. This first-of-its-kind assessment gives us a much fuller picture of what action is worth by evaluating both the market and non-market benefits of 25 proven solutions that tackle climate change and air pollution together, including the economic value of preventing illness and improving quality of life.
The findings make a powerful case for action. These solutions don’t just cut emissions, prevent premature deaths, increase income for farmers and create more jobs than traditional solutions; they can help millions of people live healthier, more productive lives while delivering economic benefits far greater than their cost. In some situations, economic benefits will drive decisions, and in others, improved health outcomes will. That means those who take action will get immediate benefits that are local, as the climate benefits from reduced temperature materialize. It’s like getting a signing bonus for a contract that is paid in longer installments. For methane in particular, it is confirmed that it is the fastest way to reduce temperature, and doing so contributes to massive economic, health, and climate benefits too.”
