Dr. Agnes Tirol-Padre retired from the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) in 2018 after more than four decades of research experience in greenhouse gas mitigation and quantification in rice systems, climate smart agriculture, soil management and biological nitrogen fixation. She holds a BSc in Chemistry from the University of Santo Tomas in the Philippines, an MSc in Agricultural Chemistry from the University of the Philippines, and a PhD in Soil Science from Chiba University, Japan, where she specialized in carbon and nitrogen management for sustainable rice systems.
At IRRI, she led GHG measurement and mitigation research in rice across India and Southeast Asia, promoting climate-smart practices such as alternate wetting and drying and developing closed-chamber protocols for measuring greenhouse gas emissions.
Throughout her career, Dr. Padre has mentored young scientists in greenhouse gas mitigation and quantification using gas chromatography and photoacoustic gas analysis, as well as in data synthesis and scientific writing. She has contributed to more than 60 publications and, in retirement, continues to advise international private and philanthropic organizations on greenhouse gas mitigation strategies, quantification, and carbon credit generation.
