Program Manager, Energy

Location: Remote, Europe region only (Brussels or Berlin preferably)
Report to: Program Director, Energy
Working hours: Full-time
Salary Range: $78,000 – $97,500  (EU based range). Geographic differential will be applied based on location of hire. Candidates must have the right to work in the country from which they are applying.

About Us

The Global Methane Hub is the first coordinated philanthropic approach to methane mitigation funding. We support ambitious catalytic investments, lay the groundwork for long-term transformation of challenging sectors, and deliver quick wins in sectors that are ripe for action on the ground. The Hub focuses on the energy, agricultural, and waste sectors which account for 96% of human-caused methane emissions.

Our actions are global in nature but believe quick wins will only be had if we engage sub-nationals and local communities. Our grantmaking focuses on the highest emitting sectors and regions with a team spread out in six continents and is headquartered in Santiago, Chile.

Position Summary

The Program Manager, Energy, will be responsible for the development and execution of a complex portfolio of high-impact grantmaking initiatives, and multi-sector partnerships focused on methane reduction in the energy sector, with a focus on the EU and Latin America.  They will provide coalition-building and advocacy expertise in the related area, contribute strong project management support to the Program Director, Energy, and work closely with the Energy team, internal cross sectoral teams, grantees, external partners, policymakers, and industry leaders to accelerate methane reduction strategies in the oil and gas, coal, and other energy-related sectors ensuring GMH’s funding drives transformative change in the EU Region. This role will also manage relationships with energy sector-focused grantees in the Latin America region.

Job Responsibilities

Program Management

  • Responsible for the development, management, and monitoring of results-based grantmaking in the Energy portfolio, ensuring strategy alignment with GMH’s Energy program objectives with a primary focus on advocacy and campaigns in Europe and Latin America.
  • Leads a portfolio of evidence-based advocacy initiatives, ensuring policy recommendations are informed by research and data-driven insights.
  • Fosters collaboration among GMH’s portfolio of grantees in Europe working to advance policies to reduce methane pollution, serves as a primary point of contact for government officials from the philanthropy community, and helps align and channel resources toward a shared strategy.
  • Uses regional and technical expertise to influence the GMH Energy advocacy strategy development and execution while making recommendations on funding allocation, partnerships, and program adjustments.
  • Monitor developments in the energy methane field to identify emerging needs, gaps, and opportunities.
  • Make recommendations on relevant research and analysis to inform the effective development, delivery, and evaluation of Energy program’s work in Europe and Latin America.
  • Support the PD to set annual programmatic goals, develop key performance indicators, and oversee grant making efforts.
  • Lead programmatic planning, including goal-setting, work plan development, and impact measurement strategies for assigned Energy projects.
  • Work with GMH’s program staff across sectors on cross-cutting initiatives in the EU and Latin America and information sharing.

Stakeholder Engagement & Partnerships

  • Proactively maintain extensive external networks with experts and opinion-formers within the international methane, energy, and broader climate change and sector-specific community to identify potential grantees and ensure decision-making is shaped by up-to-date insights and research.
  • Manage relationships with grantees, the community of aligned donors, and practitioners working to advance the goals of GMH.
  • Identify appropriate partners and collaborations to advance grantmaking strategies including, as appropriate, active participation in global policy discussions on Energy methane mitigation.
  • Represent GMH in high-level discussions at meetings with NGOs, think tanks, academics, funders, private sector partners, experts, and consultants; ensure follow-up, as needed. This will include international and domestic travel.
  • Drafts updates, presentations and reporting materials for the PD to support engagement with external stakeholders, funders, and the Board.
  • Engage with funders and philanthropic partners to highlight the Energy program achievements and impact, as requested by the PD.
  • Collaborate with the Development & Impact and Communications teams to share success stories and outcomes of funded initiatives.

 Grant Management

  • Manage relationships with grantees, the community of aligned donors, and practitioners working to advance the goals of the Global Methane Hub.
  • Identify and screen potential grantees, analyze and assess background information; conduct site visits; solicit and develop funding proposals; determine appropriate funding levels
  • Assist the Program Director, Energy with planning and forecasting of upcoming funding rounds, funding priorities, and timelines for the Energy Program, including communicating this to grantees.
  • Monitor progress of existing grants, including reading grantee reports and regular engagements with existing and prospective grantees.
  • Lead the monitoring and evaluation of assigned grants, ensuring grantee progress aligns with program objectives and strategic priorities.
  • Ensure data-driven decision-making, integrating insights from grantee reports, research, and emerging trends into advocacy strategies.
  • Ensure that leadership and funders have access to timely, accurate data and research findings on program performance.

Financial Management

  • Ensure compliance with internal policies and fiscal sponsor/donor regulations governing programmatic funding and operations.
  • Work with the finance team to ensure budget adherence and accurate reporting for established energy program-related grants and initiatives and make recommendations to leadership.
  • Support the development of an annual energy sector operational budget to anticipate and plan for programmatic expenses.
  • Monitor established budgets for assigned projects or grants, making decisions within approved budgets and processes.
  • Prepare and submit expense reports, ensuring compliance with organizational financial policies.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as requested.

Candidate Profile

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field required, relevant advanced degrees and certifications preferred.
  • At least 5+ years of experience leading successful campaigns to influence public policies at the EU level and within member states.
  • Experience managing grantees or partnerships in Latin America preferred, including familiarity with regional energy policy landscapes and cross-cultural collaboration.
  • Skilled at building alliances across sectors and with a wide range of partners implementing strategic communications, research-backed direct advocacy, legal strategies, and other approaches.
  • Experience managing consultants to drive results.
  • Written and oral fluency in both English and Spanish is required.
  • Expertise in global energy systems, regulatory frameworks, and methane emissions reduction strategies.
  • Good project management skills with demonstrated ability to manage complex, $1M+ projects and learn quickly.
  • Grantmaking experience required.
  • Strong research ability and advanced oral and written communication skills, including presentations.
  • Highly collaborative with a partnership mindset. Encourages others to share the spotlight and visibly celebrates and supports the success of the team, external partners, and grantees.
  • Intellectual agility and the ability to analyze, think critically, and understand emerging issues and opportunities to reduce methane emissions.
  • Comfortable with ambiguity and uncertainty; the ability to adapt nimbly.
  • Have broad familiarity with the climate change policy landscape at international, regional, national and/or sub-national level.
  • Hands-on experience in working across geographies with multiple stakeholders, in particular in developing countries.
  • Are passionate about being part of the climate change solution.

Additional information:

  • This will be a full-time (40 hours/week) remote role and will require time flexibility in order to collaborate with staff and stakeholders in multiple time zones. The position supervisor is in the GMT-4 time zone.
  • Ability and willingness to travel internationally ~30%.
