Statement: Global Methane Hub CEO on UNSG Call to Action on Methane + London Climate Action Week

Amid Extreme Heat, King Charles and UNSG Call for Action on Methane Mitigation

Following King Charles III’s closed-door event at St. James’s Palace on June 24 to highlight solutions to reduce methane and non-CO2 pollutants during London Climate Action Week, the Global Methane Hub (GMH) released the following statement from CEO Marcelo Mena:

“Extreme heat has persisted in London this week as climate professionals from around the world come together to tackle climate change. On the hottest day in UK history, I spoke to King Charles and emphasized that we must pull the emergency brake on climate change by reducing methane emissions – the fastest, most effective way to tackle this crisis. In St. James’s Palace, it was clear that even the world’s elites are not protected from the impacts of extreme heat. The room was a microcosm of climate change’s impacts: our planet is overheating and everyone is running around trying to cool it down.

Every day, we grow closer to reaching climate overshoot, when global average temperatures exceed the 1.5°C threshold. Now is the time for action to alleviate the impacts of climate change – from extreme heat to food insecurity. We have the emergency brake, thanks to over 160 countries who have helped build the Global Methane Pledge; we just need to pull it.

Earlier this week, the UN Secretary-General laid out nine practical steps to drive rapid methane reductions across the fossil fuel, agriculture, and waste sectors by 2030 in his latest Call to Action on Methane report. Our global challenge is not about finding solutions – it’s about implementing them. The Global Methane Hub is committed to working with our partners around the world to increase ambition for methane reduction so we can all have cleaner air, more sustainable food systems, less extreme weather, and more economic opportunities.”
