For Immediate Release: November 8, 2025
Following yesterday’s announcement of the joint declaration “Drastically Reducing Methane Emissions in Global Fossil Fuel Sector” — signed by members of the Climate and Clean Air Coalition: Canada, France, Germany, Japan, Kazakhstan, Norway, and the United Kingdom with support from the European Commission, The Latin American Energy Organization (OLADE), and The International Energy Agency — Sarah Ann Smith, energy program director of the Global Methane Hub issued the following statement:
“The world cannot meet its climate goals without cutting methane pollution from fossil fuels. In 2024, the European Union took a landmark step by requiring oil and gas producers to measure, report, and cut methane emissions — a game-changing standard that holds both domestic producers and international suppliers accountable.
Now, other major oil and gas importers and exporters are joining together in pursuit of near-zero methane emissions across the global fossil fuel sector. This collaboration creates a level playing field built on transparency, uniform standards, and shared responsibility for reducing emissions across the supply chain. It’s a win for both exporters and importers: producers that move first will gain a competitive edge in increasingly climate-conscious markets, while consumers can make energy choices that align with their climate goals.
This agreement is another step toward achieving significant reduction in methane emissions to create an opportunity to slow climate change. There is still more work to do on the path toward phasing out harmful fossil fuels, but coupling robust monitoring with clear market incentives that reward transparency and ambition fosters notable progress. Cutting methane is the fastest way to slow global warming. Collective action like this is how we make this decade a turning point for the planet.”
